Challenge Cup in review: Week 1!

Written by Lant in Counter-Strike Source News

With AntiX's predictions made last week, the CSS community knew that they had a lot to prove, alas though, there were always going to be miss-haps, [tdm] giving NarChaD a default, thankfully this is the only default of the first week and hopefully the cup. Anyway! On with the results!

Group 1 Results

iR vs. DFA

I think this is a great shocker, iR beating DFA their last 3 games in the Open ladder, myself and many others must have thought iR would make it a fourth win. DFA however, didn't share this view, with Dec getting one over on iR and wiped the floor with them, having a fairly amazing 30+ kills on CT. A comfortable 16-5 victory ensued, they get those critical 3 points!

Man of the match has to be: Dec from DFA.

Fate vs. Epidemic

A titan of a team, Team Fate had “trouble” before the cup started, having a few members leaving but they came in to this match strong, Epidemic, as mentioned last week are unfortunately an unknown team within the GBGL playing vs. one of the top 3 teams being routed for to win, didn't stand much of a chance by the looks of it, server problems gave Epidemic the lead at the start but the lag, and the lead, soon went, Fate coming back in to their own and going on to win 16-7. You wonder what would of happened if the lag had stayed...

Man of the match: RobZ from Team Fate.

Group 1 Overview

First week in the Challenge cup for group 1 and there are already two teams rising above the other two, Fate and DFA. Both teams will look to take advantage of their lead at the moment and will go in to their next matches confident of passing their group. For these two teams though, de_inferno on the last week will be the decider. Carnage, death and heavy banter to come!

Group 2 Results

Syn vs. afraidG

AfraidG, one of the best Latvian clans, pretty much dominated Syndicate, AfraidG taking a smooth lead and then finishing it 16-3. Syndicate have finally been defeated from their 6 win streak against teams like DFA and iR. So this shows that AfraidG aren't afraid of the big teams!

Man of the match: sko0s from AfraidG

[tdm] vs. NarChaD

Sigh, I hate using the word disgraceful..but this was disgraceful, all teams had 3 weeks of delays and problems before their first match and yet [tdm] still manage to default a match...Giving NarChaD the 3 points but I'm sure they'd want that all important round difference. Another week before NarChaD are unleashed upon GBGL.

Man of the match: The ones that showed up.

Group 2 Overview

Well, AfraidG taking Syndicate by storm should be a wake up call to all teams, no one knew the result would be that one way! NarChaD however are still going to be big favourites to go far in this cup. These two teams will go head to head on de_nuke so this should be one hell of a match to watch!

Group 3 Results

eleventh vs. [TTK]

[TTK], a relatively new clan, pretty much got swept of their feet with the amazing tactics and skill of eleventh:hour who didn't show any sign of mercy or halting their relentless attacks. [TTK] though however cant be put down, they've single handedly got a part of GBGL CSS back alive and so for that, I, and many of the community salute them. Good luck in the rest of your lifetime in GBGL.

Man of the match: Tr3x of eleventh:hour

GT! vs. FF$

Well, this could be one of the more obscure matches of the week. GT! And FF$ are relatively new teams to GBGL. So the match, well, I mean.....GT!...what were they doing, I think they set a record number of team kills, it wasn't exactly hard for a team like FF$ to capitalise and just destroy GT! 16-0. Hard thinking must be going through the heads of the GT! Players on what went wrong and how they can redeem themselves against the giant that is “eleventh:hour” next week.

Man of the match: DMF From FF$

Group 3 Overview

Well, with eleventh steam rolling [TTK] and FF$ just going through GT! like they weren't there, its going to be tough for both [TTK] and GT! To keep afloat in this group. Though with eleventh firm favourites for this competition, I don't think a week will be enough for GT! To pull something special out of the hat.

Group 4 Results

-=ES=- vs. som.

Having played against som, I could tell that -=ES=- would have to be one good team, however, this wasn't the case, AntiX's predicting a 16-4 win to som last week, they didn't even get 4, managing only 2 rounds. However they cant be seen as getting owned, som could be, if not will be, the team that tops the Group 4 table so any rounds against them are good ones.

Man of the match: Dannnn for som.

Corruption vs. xSect.8x

Probably the closest match of the week, Corruption expected to thrash Sect.8 according to AntiX, but this was far from the case, Sect.8 pretty much dominated the terrorist half 10-5, so you'd expect it to carry on Sect.8's way. Sect.8 winning the first round of the second half, but then Corruption exploded, winning the next 11 rounds in a row to make it 16-11 to Corruption.

Man of the match: Shortie of Corruption.

Group 4 Overview

Well, with som. And Corruption winning both their matches, easily and not so easily, it does appear that both Sect.8 and -=ES=- will need to get their act together and get training relentlessly within the next week to stand a chance of getting through to the next round!

The week in review

Woah! What a first week this has been! I don't think the GBGL could of asked for a better week, all went well, with de_dust2 putting teams to the test with the top teams emerging victorious. Next week will have teams training rigorously to take the crucial 3 points. de_nuke....well...what a map, mainly aimed at the ct's but if a team member slips up anywhere, the terrorists immediately gain an advantage. I think the vent system within the two bomb site's will prove crucial, with easy access to both sites, reverses, decoys and confusion are definitely to follow!
